In the final months of World War I, Germany launched a devastating campaign that would forever change the course of history. The new policy of unrestricted submarine warfare was designed to starve Britain into submission by sinking any and all ships attempting to reach its shores.

The results were nothing short of catastrophic for the British war effort. Prior to this new strategy, German U-boats had sunk an average of 49 merchant vessels per month in January 1917. However, once Germany opened fire with abandon, the numbers skyrocketed:

February: 105 ships lost

March: An staggering 147 ships sent to the bottom

At its peak, nearly one-quarter (25%) of all Britain-bound shipping was being sunk by German subs alone! It seemed as if nothing could stop this relentless onslaught.

But wait – there were those who refused to give up without a fight...

The British Admiralty eventually woke from their slumber and began implementing effective countermeasures. The once-rampant sinking spree came to an abrupt halt, saving countless lives at sea.

However, the damage had already been done. For Britain's merchant fleet, March 1917 would forever be remembered as 'Black Month.' It marked a turning point in World War I – one from which Germany would never fully recover.
